The Tampa Museum of Art will present a survey of paintings and works on paper by artist Mernet Larsen (American, b. 1940). A long-time resident of Tampa and former Professor of Painting at the University of South Florida, Larsen is one of the region’s most prodigious artists. Her work alludes to a range of art historical references, from 13th-century Japanese scrolls, 15th-century Italian painting, to the geometric abstractions of Russian artist El Lissitzky (1980-1941). Her early abstract compositions, such Duccio’s Saint (1988) in the Tampa Museum of Art’s collection, reflect her ongoing formal explorations of experiential time, space, and color. Later figurative paintings, including the recent work Raft (2017), depict ordinary moments and activities—from reading in bed, attending casual dinners, to participating in faculty meetings. Yet, it is her unusual perspective and linear approach to figuration that render Larsen’s unique and genuine reflections of everyday life. The exhibition Mernet Larsen will feature never-before-seen early drawings from her student days, a select group of studies and works on paper, and a survey of paintings from the 1960s to the present.
Paintings Explore Factory Farming and Human Implications

Tampa nonprofit gallery and organization, Tempus Projects is pleased to present Dysgeusia, a solo exhibition of paintings by artist Ashley Gillam. Slated to premiere to an opening reception on Saturday, September 30 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and run through Friday, November 3. Dygeusia is the first solo exhibition of Gillam’s work.
Dysgeusia takes its name from a term referring to an alteration or distortion in one’s sense of taste. Appropriately, the exhibition is a series of meditations on sacrifice and the interactions between living beings, humans and animals, vis-à-vis the food industry and factory farming. By way of placing a semi-anonymous human figure in the place of animals enduring the horrors of factory farming, Gillam’s paintings simultaneously implicate the audience while urging empathy. Indeed, the paintings suggest a direct and real relationship between the victim and the viewer, finding an almost spiritual as well as physical, even biological analog between humans and animals.
Based in Tampa, Florida, Ashley Gillam primarily works in painting.
She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of South Florida in 2017.

Opening on the first day of a new and controversial presidential term, while marches are being organized around the globe in support of equal rights, this all-media exhibition features works inspired by artist Zoe Leonard’s 1992 manifesto “I want a president” and is intended to incite reflection, discussion and activism that explores our demands and desires for a Head of State. With works selected by guest juror Margaret Miller, Director of University of South Florida’s Institute for Research in Art, exhibiting artists include Monique Blom, Will Douglas, Keiff Jones, Vincent Karl, Daniela Mora, Libbi Ponce, Ivan Riascos, and Julie Wills with The Bridge Collaborative.
About the Juror:
Margaret Miller is a tenured Professor in the School of Art and Art History and Director of the Institute for Research in Art at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. The Institute for Research in Art is dedicated to organizing and presenting exhibitions and commissioning works by internationally significant emerging and acclaimed artists. Miller holds an MA degree from the University of Hawaii in Asian Art History. From 1978 to 2001 she served as Director of the USF Contemporary Art Museum and in 2001 was appointed to also serve as Director of Graphicstudio, USF’s renowned art production atelier. The Contemporary Art Museum, Graphicstudio and USF’s Public Art Program form the Institute for Research in Art in the College of The Arts. During her tenure at USF she has taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and curated numerous exhibitions with accompanying catalogues.
CUNSTHAUS was established in the spring of 2016 by fourteen women in the Tampa Bay-area with practices in education, visual art, music, curation, and writing. Sited next to artist-run gallery space Tempus Projects, established in 2009, CUNSTHAUS is further developing the Seminole Heights neighborhood as an arts destination. Offering unique exhibitions and events spanning a range of media and a varied survey of artists, CUNSTHAUS’ primary mission is to create a space for artistic expression, dialogue and reflection contributing to the arts community within the local neighborhood of Seminole Heights and the Tampa Bay region.

Theo Wujcik is a professor emeritus of University of South Florida where he taught from 1972 to 2003. Wujcik’s works have been included in exhibitions and in the permanent collections of America’s premier art institutions such as New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art; Museum of Modern Art; Brooklyn Museum of Art; the Detroit Institute of Arts, Michigan; and Yale University Art Gallery, Connecticut.
Internationally, exhibitions featuring Wujcik’s work were organized by the New World Museum in San Francisco through the United Nations World Environment Programme: Melting Ice: A Hot Topic, Envisioning Change, premiered at the Nobel Peace Center, Oslo, Norway; traveled to the Bozar Center for Fine Arts in Brussels, Belgium; the Ministry of Culture in Monaco and closing at the Field House Museum in Chicago.
Wujcik is the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award, University of South Florida Research and Creative Scholarship Grant, Florida Division of Cultural Affairs Individual Artist Fellowship, Edwin Austin Abbey Memorial Fund for Mural Painting and a Fellowship Award from the National Academy of Design, New York.
Wujcik was a master lithographic printer for Tamarind and Gemini G.E.L. print studios, both in Los Angeles, California and the Detroit Lithography Workshop, Michigan and a shop manager for the University of South Florida’s Graphicstudio. He has worked with internationally renowned artists such as Robert Morris, James Rosenquist, Ed Ruscha, Richard Anuszkiewicz and Nicholas Krushenick. Wujcik’s own prints have been published by Brooke Alexander Gallery in New York, Tamarind Lithography Workshop in California, Pyramid Arts and Graphicstudio.
